A WEEK LATER, ALL THE LITTLE hairs on the back of Poppy’s neck stood on end as she sat at her desk, working on her latest article. She didn’t need to look up to know that Jake had walked into the department.

He was back from holidays. She told herself she didn’t care and clicked to a new screen on her computer. Then, without her permission, her gaze flicked across to where he was shrugging out of his jacket.Fishing obviously agreed with him. He was golden-brown and dark stubble covered his cheeks. He looked lean and a little dangerous and wild.

She returned her attention to the computer screen. She didn’t care how he looked or whether he was dangerous or not. Sleeping with him had been a big mistake. As for allowing him to comfort her in her grief…Words were inadequate to describe the wholehearted chagrin she felt for ever allowing herself to turn to him.

She was more angry with herself than him. She’d known exactly what he was before she slept with him—a cynical, smart-mouthed pants man. She’d even told him so straight to his face while they were still basking in the afterglow of yet another round of spectacular sex. And yet she’d still allowed herself to hope. Not for long—only for those few almost-conscious seconds between sleeping and waking—but for long enough. She’d reached out a hand to touch him, to make sure he was real, to reassure herself that he had actually held her in his arms and said all the right things and been so…human and generous. And all she’d found was cold, empty sheets.

Stupid. He’d told her up front, hadn’t he? He wasn’t interested in a relationship. And yet for those few foolish seconds she’d imagined that he would be there for her when she woke. That he liked her. That there was more than great sex between them.

More fool her.

A shadow fell over her desk. She kept her attention on the computer screen and her fingers moving on the keyboard.

“Hey. How did your uncle’s funeral go?” Jake asked.

“Fine. Thank you.”

“I guess you took a few days off?”

“That’s right.”

Still she didn’t look at him. She had no idea what she was typing. She was too busy concentrating on keeping her face impassive.

“What about your car? Did you get that sorted out?”

“Yes, thank you.”

For a long moment there was nothing but the sound of her fingers tapping on the keyboard. She could feel him watching her, but she refused to look at him. Finally he turned and walked away. Poppy let her breath out and her shoulders drop.

What on earth had possessed her to get naked and sweaty with a colleague? She must have been sniffing glue that night in Tamworth. And in the car after that. And at her parents’ place.

She risked a glance at his retreating back. Her eyes gravitated to his perfect ass, then dropped down his long legs.

Right. That was why. He was sexy as all get out.

She dragged her gaze away. She had no business being attracted to a man who’d proven himself so unworthy.
